How did you do on problem 4? The other problems? Please post comments on what you got, how you did it, etc, here. Your comments will be much appreciated!
Did anyone notice how the Fermi surface evolves from closed to open in problem 4? What does open mean? What does closed mean?
Bonus question for discussion here: For the E vs k relation of problem 4, at what filling does the Fermi surface transition from closed to open?
I thought that the last homework was pretty interesting. Problems 1-3 where not too hard, but a little more direction on number four would have been nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of direction? I am not sure what you mean.
DeleteI think the biggest thing to realize for problem 4 is that choosing an appropriate reference makes it easier to graph and understand the problem. The other problems were pretty straight forward.
ReplyDeleteThe Fermi Surfaces changed from being rounded to being more diamond like as the states started filling up.
What do you mean by reference? What was your reference?
DeleteYes it is pretty intriguing how it evolves.
True. But how did you figure out what value of E_f would give you 1/4 or 3/4 filling? Isn't that kind of tricky to estimate, or am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteHow come?
ReplyDeletegood point.
